History of the Whitley Building
The Burleson Youth Association (BYA) was formed in 1976 by a group of local residents to provide the youth of Burleson with opportunities to play organized baseball and softball.
For many years, the BYA had no permanent home. From 1976 to 2003, player registrations were held at local restaurants and churches, while Board meetings and team drafts were hosted wherever space was available. As Burleson grew, so did the need for a stable and secure location to serve the community.
Led by then-President Randy Whitley, the BYA Board approached the City of Burleson with a proposal: if the city would provide a piece of land, BYA would cover the cost of constructing a building. The city agreed, designating a small parcel at the back of Bartlett Park near the pond.
In 2002, construction began. Thanks to the generosity of BYA members and local supporters, all major exterior work—including the slab, framing, roof, siding, and electrical—was donated at no cost. On December 1, 2004, the exterior was completed, and the building was officially dedicated by the BYA Board of Directors and the City of Burleson to serve the youth of the community.
In 2005, as Randy’s 12-year tenure as BYA President came to a close, he reflected that helping establish a permanent home for the organization was his greatest accomplishment. Recognizing his years of commitment, incoming President James Sullivan introduced a motion to name the building in Randy’s honor. The motion passed unanimously, and the facility became known as The Whitley Building.
We remain grateful to the many people who made this possible—the BYA Board, the City of Burleson, and the countless volunteers who donated their time, skills, and materials. Without their dedication, we might still be signing players up at Dairy Queen or Chicken Express!
Today, The Whitley Building stands as a symbol of hard work, generosity, and community spirit. We hope everyone who visits appreciates the effort and dedication that went into making it a reality.
